An Overview of Harvards Nuclear Deterrence Certificate Program

Adam Schwarze currently serves as a lieutenant and member of the United States Navy SEAL team stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Over almost 20 years and nine tours of duty as both a US Marine and a SEAL, he has earned multiple meritorious promotions and three medals for valor. In addition to his military career, Adam Schwarze is pursuing a master of liberal arts degree from Harvard University with a concentration in international security and a certificate in nuclear deterrence.

The completion of Harvard’s professional-level Nuclear Deterrence Graduate Certificate demonstrates that a student has mastered a complex set of material on the subject, in both a historical and a contemporary sense. The certificate program also emphasizes engagement with issues involving arms control, security, and non-proliferation in general. Students gain a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of deterrence, and can build on this knowledge to advance in a variety of government-related, military, and nongovernmental organizational positions.

This program originated out of consultations with the Air Force and specifically counts toward credit for Harvard’s International Relations degree requirements. It involves several learning goals, including building a comprehensive view of deterrence theory that focuses on how the growth and proliferation of nuclear weapons affected issues of deterrence during the Cold War. This generation-defining standoff between the Western allies and their Soviet bloc adversaries spanned from roughly the end of World War II to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Students in the program also delve into the advanced technology of intercontinental ballistic missiles and other kinds of nuclear weapons delivery systems while increasing their awareness of international policy frameworks designed to address deterrence globally.
